Chief Petty Officer George M ELLIOTT, as ROYAL NAVY COXSWAIN and SURVIVOR, to commemorate the massive losses of NAVAL VESSELS in action, here the unforgettable (censored long time) explosive end on 25 Nov 1941 off SOLLUM, four minutes after 3 torpedo hits from U-Boat 331, of the BATTLESHIP HMS BARHAM, with the loss of 862 lives; with the loss of ARK ROYAL & the severe damage to Queen Elizabeth and Valiant. 1941 year end was the low point of the RN’s war in the Eastern MEDITERRANEAN; BARHAM had been built in 1913-15, the 5th Battle Squadron leader at JUTLAND,, survived torpedo from U-30 28Dec39, in the BATTLE of CAPE MATAPAN 28Mar41; bombed off Crete (2 x 5001b) she had needed repairs in Durban; George had later wartime service with 601 FLOTILLA, COMBINED OPERATIONS, mainly with LANDING CRAFT provision and subsequent repair procedures.
